Episode 383 – Maintaining Spouse & Cleaning Company Balance

Today Mike is having a special edition of the podcast, with an even more special guest, Mike’s wife, Nathalie!

In today’s podcast we are going to talk about balancing your family and friend time with your company time. If you find yourself feeling guilty when you’re spending time with your family, or if you feel guilty when you’re working and just want to find time to spend with your family or friends, than you’re in the right place.

When Mike first started his cleaning company almost two decades ago, no matter where he was or what he was doing, he found himself constantly thinking about how he could grow his company. But when he stopped to think about it, he realized that he was growing his company to get money for his family, and by spending his time with his family but still focusing mentally on his business he was actually putting strain on his relationships. Balancing work time and family time can be difficult, but we are here to help guide you to a healthy compromise between the two.

First things first, we have to make sure that we have some things straight. A lot of people have the idea that the more time they spend working on, or even worse, in their business, the more successful they’ll be. Some people decide to do the cleaning themselves to try and save on labor, when in reality you should be looking at your employees as assets that will help you make more money in the long run. But if you are the one that is busy working in your company, than who is going to be the one working on it? You want to make sure that as the owner, you are doing the high value work, not the low value.

Another common belief that people have is that their company requires them specifically, and that they live to serve their business. Oftentimes people start out hoping to grow their business to the point that they have more time and freedom, only to wake up one day and realize that they’re a slave to their company. If you get hyper-focused on growing your business, you can find yourself overworked and overstressed which can lead to not only you getting burnt out personally, but also can hinder your creativity and ability to work on your company.

It is also common thinking that if an employee or customer can’t get ahold of you 24/7, than they’re going to quit. However if you can properly delegate, prioritize, and box your time than that won’t be the case. A great way to navigate around that is having specific times each day that you will be open to take calls. This can be beneficial in a few ways. For one it helps you have times that you can work in and on your business. On top of that, you’ll find that your employees will grow a lot and become more reliable and equipped to handle situations that they may not be able to handle otherwise. It can be scary at first, but you will quickly learn that there aren’t many things that need to be fixed right away that your employees can’t handle. Instead of you personally being there for any little thing that goes wrong, you should have systems and trained staff that can handle the situation instead.
